This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want to experience the absolute best of what Sri Lanka has to offer. We’ve created a classic loop that combines the must-see cultural highlights with stunning nature and relaxation, all at a comfortable pace. You’ll journey through the Cultural Triangle, the serene Hill Country, go on a wild safari, and finish by dipping your toes in the warm Indian Ocean.

Essential Pre-Trip Planning

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different parts of the island at different times. For this classic route, the best time to visit is during the dry season from December to April, when the Hill Country and the southern beaches are sunny and beautiful.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most visitors will need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter Sri Lanka. This is a simple online application that you should complete at least a few days before your flight. Always check the official government website for the latest requirements.

What to Pack

Pack light! You’ll mostly need lightweight clothing like t-shirts, shorts, and dresses. However, be sure to include:

  • A pair of long trousers or a long skirt/sarong for visiting temples.
  • A light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings in the Hill Country (like Ella).
  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking sandals.
  • Mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and a hat.
  • A universal power adapter.

Getting Around

This itinerary uses a mix of transport. While buses are the cheapest option, hiring a private driver for parts of the journey (especially between major cities) can save a lot of time and hassle. The train journey from Kandy to Ella is a must-do experience in itself!

The Complete 14-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Acclimatizing in Negombo

Welcome to Sri Lanka! After landing at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), your first stop should be getting a local SIM card and currency right at the airport. From there, take a short 20-minute taxi or tuk-tuk ride to the nearby coastal town of Negombo. It’s a much more relaxing first stop than the busy capital, Colombo. Check into your hotel, take a walk along the beach to stretch your legs, and enjoy a fresh seafood dinner as you watch the sunset.
